This simple scarf, knit with bulky yarn, is an excellent introduction to short rows. Bulky yarn and big needles make it easy to see your wrapped stitches; and this scarf can be completed in an evening or two—making it a perfect last minute gift.
Design by: Stephanie Shiman
Yarn: Wonderland Yarns “TweedleDeeDum” bulky weight yarn, 4 oz skein, 87 yards;
100% superwash merino: 2 skeins
Note: We made two versions using the same pattern, but worked at different gauges—see photo on reverse. We couldn’t decide which we preferred! The purple scarf was knit on size US 11 needles, getting a gauge of 3 sts an inch resulting in more defined ruffles and roll. The red scarf is longer, softer, and drapier, but the ruffles are more relaxed. For the latter, we used size US 13 needles and got a gauge of 2.5 sts an inch. The purple scarf uses a bit less yarn, but two skeins should be adequate for either.
Needles & Notions:
US size 11 OR US size13, 24” circulars (or size to get gauge), darning needle, stitch marker
Gauge: 12 sts = 4 inches in stockinette stitch for defined ruffles OR 10 sts = 4 inches for drapey fabric
Measurements: purple: 56” long and 6.5” wide at center red: 72” long and 7” wide at center
Every yard is an adventure!
